Prof. Heuer received Honorary Doctorate at Charles University

Prof. Rolf-Dieter Heuer has been cooperating with the Czech scientific community since the era of LEP accelerator experiments in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

“In spite of working on different experiments, we have one common publication on Higgs boson search from that time. The Higgs boson was discovered a decade later when the LEP accelerator was replaced by a more effective LHC. Even then the Czech experts from Charles University and other institutions as well as Prof. Heuer were present at the discovery. Prof. Heuer was the General Manager at that time and had a great merit in LHC accelerator success. I also had the chance to work with Prof. Heuer within the CERN Council and our community of particle physicists knows him as a great scientist and a nice person too,” said Prof. Rupert Leitner from the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University.

The cooperation of the Czech community of particle physicists became very intense within the years when Prof. Heuer was the General Manager of CERN. He visited the Czech Republic several times and he is also an active member of International Advisory Board of Charles University.

In the year 2012 Prof. Heuer was awarded a commemorative medal of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, in the year 2014 he got the Gold medal of Charles University, and in 2016 he received the highest award of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the medal De scientia at humanitate optime meritis.

Prof. Heuer was given the Honorary Doctorate in Karolinum on the occasion of 670th anniversary of the foundation of Charles University and the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Republic. The laudatio was presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Prof. Jan Kratochvíl.

At the ceremony a significant archeologist Prof. Thomas E. Levy was also honoured by the same academic degree.
