English Courses at MFF UK

English language courses are listed as optional courses. However, every student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is obliged to pass the compulsory exam in general and specialised English. The exam is the same for students of all levels. Students usually sit for the exam in the fourth semester of their bachelor study programme.

Students must register for the exam in SIS under code NJAZ091.

Preparatory English Courses

The Department of Language Education provides students with a four-semester preparation programme for the exam: two teaching hours a week for higher levels – codes NJAZ070, 170, 072, 172, 074, 174, 090, 176 and/or four teaching hours a week for lower levels – codes NJAZ071, 073, 075, 089.

For each course successfully passed, students will receive 1 credit in the faculty credit system as well as an additional 5 bonus points which will be reflected in assessing the student’s performance in the final compulsory English exam. For additional specialized courses and international exam preparation courses, students will receive three credits in the faculty credit system for each successfully completed course.

Course requirements include: written tests (grammatical and lexical, listening, reading comprehension and specialised English), class work and class attendance.

Courses may be repeated in the event of failure to meet course requirements.

Specialised courses offer more opportunity to explore the language in the context of mathematics, physics and/or computer science. These courses assume language competence and sufficient specialised knowledge of the given discipline. It is highly recommended that students first pass the compulsory English exam.

For these courses, students will receive three credits in the faculty credit system for each successfully completed course.

Courses may be repeated in the event of failure to meet course requirements.
