Christian Stegmann: The Einstein Telescope – Europe’s Future in Gravitational Wave Astronomy

5. října 2023

The detection of gravitational waves using current instruments has opened a new window to the Universe and to observe hidden cosmic processes, providing insights into phenomena beyond the reach of other observation methods. This marked the beginning of gravitational wave astronomy, signaling the dawn of a new era. However, the journey has just begun. We can construct improved instruments with higher sensitivity, allowing us to eavesdrop on the early universe and continuously record gravitational waves generated by a variety of different sources. In Europe, our aim is to construct the Einstein Telescope. It will be more sensitive, located underground, and undeniably cutting-edge. A major open question is the location where the Einstein Telescope will be built. In addition to candidate sites in the region near Limburg in the Netherlands and the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, Lusatia, not far from Prague, has now also come into the spotlight because of its excellent seismic properties. In the presentation, I will provide an update on the plans and the current state of this remarkable endeavor.
