String field theory provides a non-manifestly background independent off-shell formulation of string theory. This is useful for understanding how different backgrounds are connected, but also for discovery of new backgrounds.

The topics covered in this PhD project would range from construction and study of new classical solutions to both open and closed string field theories, developing efficient methods to calculating string vertices and off-shell amplitudes, and study of open-closed duality.

The technical tools include two-dimensional conformal field theory, theory of Riemann surfaces and homotopy algebras.
