SIAM Organisation Honours Erin Carson and Marc Fehling from Matfyz

March 10, 2025

Erin Carson from the Department of Numerical Mathematics and Marc Fehling from Department of Mathematical Analysis have received awards from the international Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The award ceremony was part of the CSE25 conference, which took place in early March in Texas, USA.

The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) was founded in 1952 as a non-profit organisation connecting mathematical research with practical applications. The organisation currently has around 14,000 members, including representatives from academia, industry, as well as government and military institutions. SIAM's activities include educational programmes for students and professionals, facilitating internships and job placements, and recognising outstanding research in applied mathematics and computational science.

At the Conference on Computational Science and Engineering 2025 (CSE25) in Fort Worth, Texas, a total of five awards were presented.

The James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing was awarded to Erin Carson, an associate professor at the Department of Numerical Mathematics at Matfyz. The SIAM committee recognised her for contributions to the performance and stability of mixed-precision numerical linear algebra.

Carson graduated in computer science from the University of Virginia and the University of California. Then, she spent three years as a postdoctoral researcher at New York University before joining Matfyz. Her research focuses on the analysis of matrix computations and the development of parallel algorithms for large-scale problems, with a particular focus on their finite precision behaviour on modern heterogeneous hardware. In 2023, she was awarded a prestigious ERC Starting Grant for the development of new algorithms for state-of-the-art supercomputers.

The SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering was awarded to a 14-member team working on the deal.II project whose member is also Dr Marc Fehling from CUNI MFF.

Dr Marc Fehling has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Mathematical Analysis since last year, having previously spent four years at Colorado State University. He has been one of the lead developers of the international deal.II project since 2021. Deal.II is an open-source C++ software library supporting the creation of individual finite element codes. The software employs cutting-edge programming techniques and is widely used both in academia and by professionals in the field.

More information about the awarded scientists and projects is available on the SIAM website.
