Open Day: What Did You Want to Know the Most?

November 29, 2021

Matfyz brings you the summary of Q&A part of the online Open Day programme, which is related to the information about application, learning intensity, or study programmes in general. We wish we could answer as many questions as possible to make your decision process easier. Here we go!

What English programmes can I study at Matfyz?

We offer Bachelor Programme in Computer Science, Master Programmes in Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics and PhD Programmes in all of these disciplines.

Is Matfyz planning to open bachelor’s degree programme in Physics as well?

At the moment no. However, we are planning in collaboration with the Faculty of Science to open a joint programme called Science, which might be accredited in one or two years. The programme will cover physics, chemistry, and biology.

How to apply and get accepted to Matfyz?

The process is truly simple! Do not forget to check the deadlines and send the online application form. The only request which we insist on is to send us your application with all the attached files in due time (it is usually the end of March).

For Bachelor’s degree programmes in English, there is no entrance exam. The applicant is accepted based on his or her score in SAT or ACT standardized tests and on the High School Graduation Certificate. Find out more here.

In most cases of the English Master programmes, the applicant is accepted without passing the entrance exam (the rules are shared on our website). The exception relates to the Master Programme of Computer Science. Applicants must deliver so-called “home assignment” assigned by the faculty. Find out more here.

If I am interested in studying programming, do I need to have some background knowledge and skills with programming before entering Matfyz?

No, you do not. Preliminary skill of programming is not requested. However, it is necessary to be aware of the high school level of mathematics.

Why should I choose Matfyz instead of ČVUT?

Only someone who has studied both schools could give us a good answer. Matfyz has great international and domestic results, employment rate and attitude towards students. ČVUT is a bigger and more “mass” university, since it accepts a bigger number of applicants. On the contrary Matfyz promotes a more individualistic approach.

ČVUT is rather technically oriented, Matfyz tends to develop analytical and critical thinking along with more abstract theoretical basics. Nevertheless, even though we focus on theory significantly, we still keep winning numerous competitions.

How big is the chance that my request for a dormitory will be accepted?

Since you are an international student, your chance is 100 %.

What should I do if I find out that I lag behind my classmates in the course of my studies?

There are certain courses and seminars, which are provided by the faculty during the semester. Also, your older colleagues are willing to help if needed. Most of them offer catch-up classes. We would like to encourage you to contact your tutors and advisors if you would feel lost.

Is it possible to make some extra money during my studies?

Yes, of course. We also support our students’ work and good ideas with grants and scholarships. Furthermore, we regularly organize so-called Days of Companies, where you may find your possible employment. However, the first year of Bachelor Programmes is usually demanding and it is not advised to not focus fully on your studies.

Do I need to attend both the lectures and seminars?

No, usually only seminars are obligatory. But we strongly recommend you to also attend the lectures, hence the theory helps to make your seminars easier.

Is studying at Matfyz demanding to the extent that I would have to avoid certain hobbies and limit my social life?

Not really. A lot of our students study two various programmes or universities simultaneously, for instance music and mathematics (that is truly a common combination). Others are amazing sportspersons, some of them professional. Besides, Matfyz holds many social events during the year and encourages you to cooperate with your classmates.

What is the percentage of women studying at Matfyz?

The average share accounts for 25 % of women at Matfyz. The number varies from programme to programme of course. However, we would like to encourage everyone who desires to study mathematics, physics, or computer science to try to apply. Everybody has a chance!

Is it possible to create my timetable freely?

During your first year of studies, it is more fixed than during your following years when we try to enable our students to adjust the timetable to their own needs as much as possible.

Can I change my study programme while studying?

No, transfers are not allowed. You must always apply and meet the admission requirements again.

Does the Institute of Computer Science have any preferences regarding the operating system?

No, it really depends on your specialization, but also on classes themselves. From the second year of studies, we also work with various programming languages and there is nothing advantageous or disadvantageous about having a preference.

How many students go abroad for an internship and where?

The number is high, but not in the first year of studying. We mostly advise our students to apply for an internship in their second, or best in their third year. The possibilities are wide – from Europe to very exotic countries.
